Opposition: two poles that must learn to face each other

An opposition happens when two planets stand across from each other in the chart. The aspect creates polarity. One side wants one thing; the other side answers from a different sign, house, and need.

Oppositions are often lived through relationships because another person can carry the opposite pole for us. But the deeper task is not to defeat one side. It is to hold both.

Nina Simone had Mercury in Pisces opposite Mars in Virgo. Mercury describes thought, voice, language, and perception. Mars describes anger, courage, attack, and action. Pisces speaks through feeling, music, permeability, and vision. Virgo insists on precision, craft, correction, and sharp detail.

This opposition is easy to hear in her work: tenderness and fury, atmosphere and exactness, spiritual longing and political edge. The voice does not choose one pole. It makes the tension audible.

What an opposition does

The opposition is an aspect of awareness. It shows where life keeps presenting a mirror. A person may identify with one planet and meet the other through partners, rivals, audiences, clients, or public situations.

Ask where each pole lives:

• Which planets are involved?
• Which signs create the polarity?
• Which houses show the life areas?
• Is one side overidentified while the other is projected?

An opposition matures when both planets receive a place at the table. It stops being a tug-of-war and becomes a line of sight.
