Ruler

A ruler is a planet that rules a sign or house. Rulers connect different parts of the chart into one system.

How to read it in a chart

A ruler is useful only inside the whole chart. In astrology, everything is read through connections: a sign is refined by a house, a house by its ruler, a planet by aspects, and a forecast by the natal base.

When you meet this term in a reading, ask three questions: what it rules, where the ruler is placed, and how that placement changes the house or sign being read.

Common mistake

A beginner mistake is to read a house only by the sign on its cusp. The ruler shows where that house sends its energy and which other part of the chart becomes involved.

Use this definition as an entry point into the chart, not as the whole reading.
